Evidence based Scientific Narrative Review on the Anticoagulant Mechanisms of Allium sativum (Garlic)

Introduction: Garlic (Allium sativum, Family: Amaryllidaceae) is a seasoning plant cultivated all over the world. contains lot of bioactive compounds including organosulfur compounds, saponins, phenolic and polysaccharides. Anticoagulant activity one pharmacological properties Garlic. The aim this study was to review mechanism anticoagulant garlic summarise potential evidence about from past studies. Method: Literature searches were conducted on PubMed Google Scholar databases. 44 full articles reviewed in detail study. findings for mechanisms summarised. Results: Organosulfur play major role property garlic. exhibits mainly through three mechanisms. Those are inhibiting platelet aggregation, retarding thrombin formation, promoting fibrinolysis. proven by several human, animal in-vitro significantly inhibits adenosine diphosphate epinephrine induced aggregation healthy subjects. administration inhibit thrombus formation rats. Aqueous methanolic extracts prolong prothrombin time. Extension clotting time reported with increasing concentrations extract. Conclusions: has been as medicinal showing resisting enhancing fibrinolysis suggests that reduces risk thrombosis therefore cardiovascular complications.
